Impactful extension with creative thinking, unlocking the connection between an Queenslander home and its elevated swimming pool, and drawing the extraordinary views into the heart of the home for everyday living.
We were given a tight timeframe for this project, with the challenge to come up with sufficient living space for a family moving from overseas. In a way, the response was a logical one - extensive amounts of retaining work has already been done on this steep site. The charming Queenslander sat somewhat quietly at the front of the site, with a cluttered backyard capped by an elevated swimming pool. Both the front Verandah and the Pool itself enjoyed expansive views of the beautiful Moreton Bay - but the house itself was completely disconnected from both the view and the pool. A strange situation, but nothing an Architect can’t fix!
We have proposed a contermpoary, lightweight extension that “floats” over the existing retaining elements, and connects the existing home to both the pool and the Bay. In essence, lifting the existing Queenslander wasn’t an option - the previous owner had already spent a fortune on Ground Floor works - but we had the opportunity to slowly step-up the home and borrow views over our neighbour’s roof. At the very top tier, one step above the Pool level, we could then angle the house between neighbouring homes to really “pull” the view into the heart of the home.
The existing Queenslander thus becomes the private part of the home. We will preserve as much of the beautiful, intricate detailing as possible - but contrast it with the simple modernity of the Extension.
We look forward to seeing this project take shape soon.
